Marquette, MI – A multi-hazard winter storm is expected to impact much of Upper Michigan this evening and overnight, bringing rapidly falling temperatures, strong winds, snow, and hazardous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, light rain and drizzle early Thursday will transition to snow tonight as temperatures fall sharply below freezing. This quick temperature drop may lead to flash freezing, creating slick and icy road conditions, especially in areas that see rain first.

Forecasters say northerly winds will strengthen tonight, with gusts exceeding 45 mph over the Keweenaw Peninsula and along Lake Superior, while gusts of 20 to 30 mph are expected elsewhere across the Upper Peninsula. The strong winds will lead to blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility at times.

Snowfall is expected to be moderate to heavy in spots, with the highest accumulations between Copper Harbor and Ironwood, including higher terrain north and east of U.S. 41 and across the Michigamme Highlands. Snow may initially be wet before becoming lighter and more prone to blowing overnight.

In addition to travel concerns, officials warn of possible power outages, lakeshore flooding, beach erosion, and weakening lake ice along Lake Superior due to strong winds and wave action. Winter Weather Advisories and Wind and Lakeshore Flood Advisories are in effect for several counties bordering Lake Superior through Friday morning.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve Friday as winds ease, though light lake-effect snow may persist through the day.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel overnight, secure loose outdoor items, and monitor local forecasts and road conditions as the storm evolves.
