Michigan – A quiet, chilly start across Marquette is about to give way to a prolonged stretch of messy spring weather, and roads could turn slick as early as tonight with freezing rain and snow mixing in. What looks manageable now may quickly change.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette , a wintry mix of rain, sleet, and snow develops later today into the evening, especially across western and north-central Upper Michigan. Accumulations remain light at first, but conditions can still create slick spots on untreated roads.

By Tuesday, precipitation becomes more widespread. Rain mixes with snow across northern areas, while southern sections of the U.P. could also see isolated thunderstorms with small hail and brief heavy rain. Drivers along US-41 and M-28 should prepare for changing road conditions through the day.

Colder air continues to settle in by Wednesday, keeping scattered snow showers in place. Then conditions intensify Wednesday night into Thursday, when accumulating snowfall becomes more likely across the region. Several inches of snow are possible, and the chance of impactful snowfall is increasing.

Ice remains a concern as well. Periods of freezing rain could create a glaze on roads and sidewalks, especially during early morning hours. This raises the risk for “flash freezing,” where wet surfaces quickly turn slick as temperatures hover near freezing.

High temperatures stay in the 30s through midweek, reinforcing a wintry feel despite the late March calendar. Travel may become hazardous at times, so allow extra time and monitor updates closely.

Looking ahead, snow showers linger into Friday before gradual improvement into the first weekend of April.
