Marquette, Michigan – A quiet start to the week will give way to a wave of thunderstorms and rough lake conditions in Upper Michigan, with beach hazards active Sunday and more widespread rainfall arriving Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a high swim risk is in effect through Sunday evening for Alger County, with a moderate risk along the Lake Superior beaches in Marquette County. Dangerous waves, strong currents, and hazardous swimming conditions are expected — especially near open beach faces and breakwalls.

Spotty lake-effect showers are possible Sunday morning, with stronger moisture surging in Monday night. A 70% chance of rain and thunderstorms is likely from late Monday through Tuesday, with gusty south winds reaching 25 mph Tuesday afternoon. Rain totals could exceed a half inch in some areas, with localized thunderstorm downpours.

After Tuesday’s storms pass, the region will briefly dry out, though NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook still keeps parts of Upper Michigan near or slightly below normal in precipitation through mid-September — offering limited drought relief.

Residents should avoid Lake Superior beaches today and monitor for updated Beach Hazard Statements and possible Thunderstorm Warnings on Tuesday.
