Marquette, Michigan – Strong to severe thunderstorms could sweep across central Upper Michigan tonight, with the greatest risk hitting south-central areas like Iron Mountain and Escanaba between 6 p.m. and midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, isolated to scattered storms may develop this evening, with a 15% chance of damaging winds and a 5% chance of large hail. The strongest cells are expected south of Marquette, where outdoor recreation and evening travel plans could be disrupted.

Counties in the yellow “slight risk” zone on Sunday’s severe weather outlook include Delta, Menominee, Dickinson, and southern Marquette. Communities such as Norway, Gladstone, and Gwinn may see gusty winds, lightning, and brief downpours. Those with camping or boating plans should monitor alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings.

The threat window ends around midnight, but forecasters caution that conditions may shift rapidly. Tonight’s storms mark one of the more active systems for the U.P. in late June, though not uncommon for early summer.

More alerts could be issued if storm coverage expands. Stay tuned for updates from the National Weather Service this evening.
