Houghton, Michigan – Blizzard conditions are continuing across the Keweenaw Peninsula Thursday evening, creating near-zero visibility and dangerous travel that is expected to last through early Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. Friday for Keweenaw and northern Houghton counties. Additional snowfall of up to two inches is expected, but strong winds gusting up to 35 mph are producing whiteout conditions as falling and blowing snow sharply reduce visibility to below one-quarter mile.
Communities including Houghton, Hancock, and Copper Harbor are experiencing rapidly deteriorating road conditions, especially along U.S. Highway 41 and exposed stretches near Lake Superior. Blowing snow is expected to continue overnight, making it difficult for road crews to keep highways clear. The hazardous conditions are impacting the Thursday evening commute and could linger into the Friday morning drive.
Local officials urge residents to restrict travel to emergencies only. Anyone who must be on the roads should carry a winter survival kit and be prepared for sudden whiteouts. Motorists who become stranded are advised to stay with their vehicles and wait for assistance.
The blizzard warning remains in effect through early Friday morning, and visibility may improve gradually after winds begin to ease toward daybreak.
