Marquette, Michigan – Drivers along M-28 between Marquette and Munising could encounter near-whiteout conditions within hours as lake-effect snow bands and 40 mph wind gusts intensify across the Upper Peninsula through early Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for much of the western and central Upper Peninsula until 1 a.m. Monday. Additional snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are expected in Keweenaw, northern Houghton and Baraga counties, with locally higher totals in eastern Baraga County. Marquette and Alger counties could see 2 to 7 inches, with up to 9 inches in higher terrain near Skandia and northwest Marquette County. Farther west, Gogebic and Ontonagon counties may receive 2 to 5 inches, with isolated totals near 8 inches north of M-28.

Blowing snow will create rapidly changing visibility Sunday, especially along exposed Lake Superior shorelines and open stretches of U.S. 41 and M-28. Snow accumulating on shoreline ice may further reduce visibility near Munising, Grand Marais and Copper Harbor.

The Sunday evening commute and late-night travel could become hazardous as untreated roads turn slick. Officials urge drivers to slow down, allow extra distance between vehicles and carry winter emergency supplies.

Advisories remain in effect until 1 a.m. Monday, and additional updates are possible if lake-effect bands intensify.
