Marquette, Mich. – Snow continues to pile up across Upper Michigan early Saturday, and drivers should expect slick, snow-covered roads through this evening as advisories stretch across nearly the entire region.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, Winter Weather Advisories are in effect until 7 p.m. EST Saturday for Marquette, Baraga, Keweenaw, Northern Houghton, Alger and Delta counties. Iron, Dickinson and Menominee counties remain under an advisory until noon CST. Additional snowfall of 3 to 5 inches is expected in many areas, with locally more than 8 inches possible in the higher terrain of Baraga County. Alger County could see up to 5 inches in its western section.

Major routes including US-41 from Houghton through Marquette and M-28 across Alger County are snow-covered in stretches. Elevated terrain near L’Anse and Copper Harbor may see the heaviest bursts, while communities such as Escanaba, Iron Mountain and Menominee continue to deal with steady light accumulation.

Road commissions are plowing, but snowfall rates may briefly outpace clearing efforts. Drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance and prepare for changing conditions, especially over higher elevations and along Lake Superior.

Snow showers will gradually taper late Saturday evening, though icy spots could persist overnight. Additional advisories may be issued if lake-effect bands redevelop.
