Marquette, Michigan – Drivers along US-41 and M-28 could encounter near whiteout conditions within hours as lake effect snow and 40 mph wind gusts sweep across Upper Michigan through early Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect across Keweenaw, Northern Houghton, Baraga, Ontonagon, Gogebic and Marquette counties. Advisories for Keweenaw, Baraga, Northern Houghton, Ontonagon and Gogebic counties continue until 1 a.m. EST Monday, while Marquette County remains under advisory until 7 a.m. EST Monday.
Additional snow totals range from 1 to 5 inches across Gogebic and Ontonagon counties, with up to 4 inches in Keweenaw and Baraga counties. In Marquette County, totals could reach 7 inches north of US-41. Winds gusting between 35 and 40 mph will create blowing snow, especially along the Keweenaw shoreline and near Lake Superior.
Visibility may drop rapidly under heavier snow bands, particularly along M-28 between Marquette and Munising and north of Houghton along US-41. Snow accumulating on lakeshore ice may further reduce visibility near exposed stretches.
Motorists should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and consider delaying travel overnight. Road conditions may remain hazardous through the Monday morning commute as lake effect bands gradually weaken.
