Marquette, MI – Heavy rain is already falling across Upper Michigan this morning, with periods of downpours and thunderstorms creating an immediate risk for flooding on roads and near rivers.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, widespread rainfall will continue through today with embedded thunderstorms capable of producing heavier bursts. Rainfall totals between 0.5 and 1.5 inches are expected through Monday morning, with locally higher amounts possible in stronger storms.

Communities including Marquette, Escanaba, Iron Mountain, and Sault Ste. Marie may see water pooling on roads and reduced visibility, especially along U.S. 41 and M-28 during heavier rain bands. The eastern Upper Peninsula could see some of the highest totals.

The combination of rain and ongoing snowmelt is increasing the risk of localized flooding, particularly along rivers and in low-lying areas. Drainage systems may become overwhelmed during periods of heavier rainfall.

Showers will become more scattered later today before another round of rain and thunderstorms develops Monday night, extending the flood risk into midweek.

Residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways and monitor local alerts. Additional advisories are likely as rainfall totals increase and river levels respond.
