Marquette, Michigan – Drivers across the western and central Upper Peninsula should prepare for hazardous travel conditions overnight into Friday as lake-effect snow and strong winds move in off Lake Superior.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, Winter Weather Advisories are in effect across multiple counties through Friday due to accumulating snow and areas of blowing snow. Snow is expected to develop late tonight and continue through the day Friday, with the most significant impacts during the morning commute.
In Gogebic, Ontonagon, Keweenaw, and northern Houghton counties, snowfall totals could reach up to three inches by late Friday morning, with wind gusts up to 40 mph creating reduced visibility, especially near the lakeshore. Roads may become snow-covered quickly, and blowing snow could make travel difficult at times.
Marquette County, including Marquette and Gwinn, may see lighter accumulations of up to an inch, but gusty winds could still cause visibility issues early Friday. Farther east, Alger County faces the longest-lasting impacts, with snow continuing into Friday evening. Accumulations there could range from one to four inches, accompanied by gusts up to 45 mph capable of bringing down small tree branches.
Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Advisories remain in effect through Friday, and slick roads may persist even after snowfall tapers off.
