Marquette, MI – Snowflakes swirl off Lake Superior this morning like a white curtain, driven sideways by biting northwest winds. The storm isn’t done yet — forecasters warn of 3 to 7 inches of snow falling across central Upper Michigan, including Marquette, by early Thursday.

The National Weather Service in Marquette says the most persistent lake effect snow bands will focus along the northwest shorelines and inland hills, where gusts up to 30 mph could drop visibility to near zero. Travel along U.S. 41 and M-28 will be hazardous, especially through open stretches where blowing snow drifts across lanes.

Temperatures will stay locked in the lower 20s today, falling into the teens by night. Wind chills between -5° and 5°F will make even short walks sting. Roads may ice quickly, particularly after plows clear and snow refreezes under gusty air. Drivers should pack emergency kits, top off fuel, and allow extra travel time if heading toward Escanaba, Houghton, or Munising.

Snow tapers Thursday, but additional snow showers are expected Friday into the weekend. Even after the flakes end, bitter cold lingers — a reminder that December’s first Arctic air has arrived for good.

Five-Day Outlook for Marquette, MI:

  • Thursday: Snow showers, high 18°F, 1–2” possible.
  • Friday: Snow likely, high 27°F.
  • Saturday: Chance of snow, high 23°F.
  • Sunday: Mostly cloudy, high 24°F.
  • Monday: Snow showers likely, high 23°F.
