Houghton, Michigan – A dangerous gale is set to sweep across western Lake Superior Tuesday evening, bringing powerful north winds, high waves, and hazardous marine conditions around Isle Royale National Park and the Keweenaw Peninsula.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Gale Warning remains in effect from 5 p.m. Tuesday through 8 a.m. Wednesday for waters from Saxon Harbor, Wisconsin, to Manitou Island, Michigan. Sustained north winds of 20 to 25 knots with gusts near 35 knots are expected to generate waves of 7 to 10 feet, especially along open waters north and east of Isle Royale.
The weather service warns that these winds will create dangerous conditions for vessels of all sizes, with the potential for capsizing or equipment damage. Visibility will also be reduced by blowing spray and occasional showers. Mariners are urged to remain in port, secure lines, and avoid open crossings overnight.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard and local harbor authorities, conditions should gradually improve by sunrise Wednesday as winds diminish and seas begin to settle. However, swells will remain elevated through mid-morning before subsiding. Another strong system could follow late Thursday, keeping mariners on alert through the weekend.
