MARQUETTE, Mich. – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to push into Upper Michigan late Friday, bringing the risk of damaging winds and heavy rain during the evening commute. The National Weather Service in Marquette warns the primary threat will be gusty winds with a 5 to 14 percent chance of severe storms across much of the Upper Peninsula.

According to the National Weather Service, storms will move in from the west between 4 and 7 p.m. in cities like Ironwood and Houghton, spreading eastward to Marquette and Iron Mountain by 6 to 9 p.m. The strongest storms are likely in the central and eastern U.P., where activity may linger until early Saturday morning.

Drivers along U.S. 41, M-28, and I-75 should be alert for sudden downpours and strong wind gusts capable of bringing down tree limbs and causing power outages. Emergency officials recommend securing outdoor items and avoiding travel during the most intense storms.

Lingering showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected in the eastern U.P. Saturday, with cooler highs in the mid-60s. More widespread rainfall is forecast to return Sunday as temperatures dip into the upper 50s and low 60s, marking a noticeable shift toward fall-like conditions.

Storm watches remain in effect Friday night, with additional advisories possible into the weekend.
