MARQUETTE, Mich. – Large waves and dangerous currents are expected to make Lake Superior beaches hazardous Thursday in Marquette and Alger counties, where swimmers are urged to stay out of the water.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, life-threatening conditions are most dangerous at Middle Bay near Presque Isle, Little Presque Isle, McCarty’s Cove, Au Train Bay, and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Exposed parts of Grand Marais Harbor are also under high risk. Officials warn beachgoers to avoid piers and break walls where waves could sweep people into the lake.
At the same time, scattered lake-effect rain showers will continue across the Upper Peninsula, with breezy winds strongest in the Keweenaw. Highs will only reach the 50s, while overnight lows dip into the 40s. Widespread rain is expected again Friday morning, with showers lingering near Lake Superior through the afternoon.
Travelers along U.S. 41 and M-28 may see slick roads and poor visibility during bursts of rain, while cooler temperatures will add to the chill near the lakeshore. Residents are advised to monitor conditions and limit time near the water until the risk eases Friday evening.
