Gaylord, Mich. – Dangerously hot and humid weather has settled over northern Michigan this weekend, with heat index values soaring into the upper 90s and 100s and lingering into Monday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, Sunday afternoon will bring peak heat index values ranging from 98°F to 105°F in cities like West Branch, Traverse City, and Gaylord. Monday will offer little relief, with similar conditions expected through the day and overnight lows only dropping to the upper 70s and low 80s in many areas.

Alpena, Houghton Lake, and Petoskey will also see extended periods of oppressive humidity and heat. The combination of high temperatures and moisture increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those working outdoors or without access to cooling.

Residents are urged to avoid strenuous activity between noon and 6 p.m., stay hydrated, wear light-colored clothing, and check on vulnerable individuals. Never leave children or pets in vehicles, and ensure animals have access to water and shade.

This is northern Michigan’s most intense heat spell so far this summer. Alerts remain in effect through Monday night, and additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
