MARQUETTE, Mich. – Strong currents on Lake Superior and the threat of storms tonight are putting Upper Michigan residents on alert. Beachgoers in Alger and Marquette counties face a dangerous swim risk Thursday evening, with the National Weather Service urging residents to stay out of the water and off piers.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a high swim risk remains in effect for Alger County beaches through tonight, with a moderate risk continuing in Marquette County. Thunderstorms are also possible this evening, creating a second hazard for residents along US-41 and M-28. Travel could be slick in spots after midnight as rainfall increases.
By Friday, rain will become more widespread, especially before 2 p.m. Showers may bring up to half an inch of new rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds near 30 mph. Saturday looks unsettled, with scattered showers persisting, though Sunday may bring a brief break with partly sunny skies.
Temperatures will remain seasonable, with highs near the mid-50s Friday and Saturday before rebounding to the lower 60s by Monday. Breezy conditions through Friday will make it feel cooler along the lakeshore.
Residents are advised to avoid swimming, monitor local alerts, and allow extra travel time if storms pass during commutes. More updates are expected from the National Weather Service as new advisories are issued through the weekend.
