Gaylord, MI – A winter storm warning remains in effect for parts of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula until 4 a.m. Saturday as a strong clipper system continues to impact the region. Heavy snow, strong winds, and plummeting temperatures are expected to create hazardous travel conditions Friday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, an additional 3 to 5 inches of snow is expected across Central and Southeast Chippewa, Western Chippewa, and Eastern Mackinac counties. Winds gusting between 45 and 50 mph could lead to significant blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility to near whiteout conditions.

Roads, bridges, and overpasses will likely become slick and hazardous as temperatures fall into the single digits overnight. The Friday evening commute is expected to be especially dangerous due to rapidly deteriorating road conditions. Authorities are urging residents to avoid travel if possible. If driving is necessary, motorists should use extreme caution, allow extra travel time, and carry emergency supplies.

The combination of high winds and heavy snow accumulation on trees may result in downed power lines and scattered power outages. With temperatures expected to remain below freezing through Saturday, prolonged outages could lead to additional risks for residents without heat.

Officials advise keeping emergency supplies on hand, including flashlights, food, and water. Residents should report power outages to their utility provider and avoid any downed lines.

For the latest updates, residents are encouraged to monitor local weather reports and follow official safety recommendations.
