Marquette, MI – A powerful blizzard continues to impact Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, bringing whiteout conditions and hazardous travel to Marquette, Baraga, and Alger counties. The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning in effect until 1 a.m. EST Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service, snowfall accumulations of 2 to 5 inches are expected, accompanied by wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph. These conditions will significantly reduce visibility, making travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel. Road conditions will be extremely slippery, and widespread blowing snow will make it difficult to see. The Wednesday evening commute is expected to be heavily impacted, with the risk of road closures or delays due to drifting snow and poor visibility. In addition, gusty winds may bring down tree branches, leading to possible power outages.
Officials advise anyone who must travel to carry a winter survival kit, allow extra time for trips, and drive with extreme caution. Sudden changes in visibility are likely, and motorists should maintain safe distances and avoid abrupt braking or acceleration.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed on weather updates and follow local emergency guidance. For the latest road conditions, check with the Michigan Department of Transportation before heading out.
