Marquette, Mich. – Dangerous swimming conditions are developing along Lake Superior today, with waves and rip currents creating a moderate swim risk for Marquette and Alger County beaches. The National Weather Service warns that only experienced swimmers should enter the water, as breaking waves and strong currents pose a safety threat through tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, higher waves east of the city—including popular spots like Au Train Bay, Miners Beach, the Grand Sable Dunes, and exposed regions of Grand Marais Harbor—are especially hazardous. Officials urge swimmers to avoid piers, breakwalls, and river outlets, where currents can intensify.

Travelers and beachgoers across central Upper Michigan should use extra caution near shorelines today. Even experienced swimmers are at risk of being pulled away from shore, while small watercraft may also encounter challenging conditions.

Weather conditions across the region are otherwise calm, with sunny skies and highs near 64 degrees expected this afternoon in Marquette. Hazardous beach conditions are forecast to subside by late tonight, with no additional weather threats expected the rest of the week.

Warnings remain in effect until tonight, and officials caution residents to stay alert for updated surf zone forecasts.
