South Bend, IN – A major early-season winter storm is targeting the Lake Michigan region, where forecasters warn of up to a foot of snow by Monday as powerful lake-effect bands develop.

According to the US National Weather Service Northern Indiana, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening (Nov. 10–11, 2025) for communities near northern Indiana and southwest Michigan.

The system will start as rain before turning to heavy snow overnight Sunday, with snowfall rates of 1–2 inches per hour possible near South Bend, La Porte, Benton Harbor, and Michigan City.

Forecasters say travel could become dangerous to nearly impossible at times, especially during the Monday morning commute when visibility may drop below a quarter mile. Total accumulations of 6–12 inches are expected, with localized higher totals close to the lakeshore.

Temperatures will fall into the low 30s, ensuring most of the precipitation sticks — marking what could be the first major winter storm of the season for the central Great Lakes.
