Amarillo, TX – The National Weather Service in Amarillo has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the western and central Texas Panhandle and the western Oklahoma Panhandle, where light snow is expected to begin late this evening and continue into Thursday morning.

The advisory is in effect from 8 PM tonight through noon Thursday and covers communities including Amarillo, Canyon, Dumas, Dalhart, Vega, Hereford, Borger, Boise City, Stratford, and Palo Duro Canyon.

Forecasters expect 1 to 3 inches of snow, with the highest totals more likely across the western Panhandles and elevated terrain near the New Mexico border. While snow amounts are modest, timing will be key: much of the accumulation is likely to occur overnight and just before dawn.

NWS officials caution that roads—especially bridges and overpasses—will become slick quickly as temperatures fall below freezing. Light snow combined with north winds may also reduce visibility at times.

The Thursday morning commute may be affected across multiple highways, including I-40, US 60, US 87, US 385, and US 54.

Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check road conditions before heading out. Oklahoma travelers can call 844-465-4997 for highway updates, while Texas travelers can dial 800-452-9292.

Snow showers are expected to diminish around midday Thursday, though cold conditions will linger into the afternoon.
