Northern California, CA – Northern California and parts of Oregon are preparing for a severe winter storm expected to last through Saturday evening. Heavy snow and high winds will create dangerous travel conditions across the region.
According to the National Weather Service, the Sierra Nevada could receive up to 3 feet of snow by Saturday night, with localized higher amounts at elevations above 6,500 feet. Ridge winds may gust up to 75 mph, compounding travel hazards on major highways, including 395 and 89. Lower elevations are forecast to see 3 to 8 inches of snow.
The Lake Tahoe area will experience significant snowfall, with wind gusts reaching up to 120 mph along the Sierra Crest. Siskiyou County, including Mount Shasta, may see accumulations of up to 3 feet with gusts of 60 mph.
Officials urge residents to avoid travel if possible, especially in mountain passes where whiteout conditions are likely. Emergency kits, tire chains, and winter gear are recommended for those who must travel. Power outages and downed trees are also possible due to strong winds.
For updates, residents can call 511 or check Caltrans online. Expect road closures and significant delays as the storm intensifies into Saturday night.
