Buffalo, NY – A Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect for much of western and northern New York from 1 a.m. Thursday through 1 a.m. Saturday, as strong winds and heavy snow are expected to make Thanksgiving travel extremely hazardous.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, snow totals could reach 10 to 20 inches in the most persistent lake effect bands, particularly downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Winds are forecast to gust up to 50 mph, creating blowing and drifting snow, low visibility, and isolated power outages due to falling branches.
The warning covers Jefferson, Lewis, Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Southern Erie Counties, including the cities of Watertown, Jamestown, Olean, Orchard Park, and Springville. Forecasters caution that heavy snow will fall in narrow, shifting bands, meaning conditions may change rapidly within a few miles.
Travelers are urged to avoid nonessential driving and to prepare for road closures or extended delays, especially through Friday. Officials recommend keeping emergency supplies—including food, water, and blankets—in vehicles.
The heaviest snow is expected Thursday through Friday, with improvement likely by Saturday morning as lake effect bands weaken and move eastward.
