Marquette, Michigan – Thunderstorms rolling across the Upper Peninsula this afternoon are set to bring frequent lightning, damaging winds, and possible hail to much of the central U.P. before sunset. Motorists and residents in Marquette, Escanaba, and along US-41 should be ready for sudden downpours and gusts up to 60 mph through early evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, storms will develop in the western U.P. and continue southeast, with the strongest cells moving through central areas between 4 and 6 p.m. EDT. The most intense storms could bring hail up to 1 inch in diameter, downed tree limbs, and hazardous travel conditions, especially near Iron Mountain and Munising.
Power outages are possible as lightning strikes and strong winds pass through Ironwood, Ishpeming, and other U.P. towns. Officials urge drivers to slow down, avoid flooded roads, and secure outdoor items. If you hear thunder, seek shelter indoors until storms pass. Residents are reminded to charge electronic devices and prepare for brief disruptions.
Storms are expected to exit the region by sunset, but additional weather alerts may be issued if conditions worsen.
