Madison, WI – A driver was arrested Wednesday night following a hit-and-run crash near Arboretum Drive, according to the University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department (UWPD).
Police responded around 11:15 p.m. to reports of a single-vehicle crash on Arboretum Drive near Mills Street. Officers found a car that had veered off the road and collided with a tree. The vehicle was totaled, but the driver was not at the scene.
According to UWPD, their Drone Team deployed thermal imaging technology to search the area. The driver, identified as Todd Nechkash II, 27, of Mineral Point, was located approximately 100 feet from the crash site, hiding in nearby trees.
Nechkash was taken to a hospital for evaluation before being arrested. He was later booked into the Dane County Jail on tentative charges of second-offense OWI, felony bail jumping, and failure to notify law enforcement of an accident.
The UWPD Drone Team, comprising 13 members, was established in 2023 and is regularly utilized for both campus and countywide operations.
