La Grande, OR – Union County residents are being urged to stay alert after a new wave of scam calls involving individuals impersonating sheriff’s deputies. The Union County Sheriff’s Office issued a public warning Sunday, noting that the scammers are even spoofing the department’s official phone number to make the calls appear legitimate.
According to the sheriff’s office, community members have reported receiving calls from individuals pretending to be deputies and claiming there is a warrant for their arrest. Callers have allegedly demanded payment to resolve the supposed issue — a tactic law enforcement says they never use.
Deputies emphasized that the department will never ask for money over the phone, will never instruct someone to pay to avoid arrest and will never demand gift cards or wire transfers for any law-enforcement-related matter. Residents are encouraged to ask questions, hang up if something feels suspicious and avoid giving money or personal information to unknown callers.
Officials noted that scam activity typically increases during the holiday season, when criminals often target elderly residents or individuals who may be more vulnerable to intimidation tactics. The sheriff’s office is asking families to check in with older relatives, neighbors and friends to make sure they are aware of the current impersonation scheme.
