La Grande, OR – A 27-year-old man from La Grande is dead following a UTV accident at the Mt. Emily Recreation Area late Wednesday night.
According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and medical personnel were dispatched at about 10 p.m. on Sept. 20 to the 201 Mainline trail, just off the MERA parking lot. Due to the remote location, Union County Search and Rescue was also called in to assist.
Dispatchers were told that a side-by-side UTV had flipped and landed on the victim, later identified as Jason Hicks of La Grande. Authorities said Hicks had been driving with friends in a separate UTV when the accident occurred. He was not breathing at the time of the 911 call.
When deputies arrived, CPR efforts were already in progress. Despite attempts by first responders, Hicks was declared deceased at the scene.
The sheriff’s office reported that alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. Crews from La Grande Fire Department, Island City Fire Department, and Oregon State Police also assisted in the response.
This tragedy marks another reminder of the risks associated with off-road recreation, particularly when alcohol is involved.
