Monroe, N.C. – Overnight downpours have triggered a flood advisory for Union County, with Monroe, Waxhaw, and nearby communities facing minor flooding and waterlogged roads through at least 4:30 a.m. Thursday. Localized flooding is impacting low-lying neighborhoods and streets, especially in areas with poor drainage.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, Doppler radar showed 2 to 4 inches of rain already falling across the region by 1:30 a.m., with up to an inch more expected before sunrise. Residents in Monroe, Wesley Chapel, Waxhaw, Mineral Springs, and Jaars should remain alert as heavy rain continues to move through the Piedmont.
Some secondary roads, especially those near creeks or with known drainage issues, could quickly become impassable. Emergency officials advise drivers to avoid water-covered roads—“Turn around, don’t drown”—and check for updated road closures. Nighttime flooding can be especially dangerous, so use extreme caution if travel is unavoidable.
Union County Emergency Management recommends moving valuables to higher ground if you live in flood-prone areas, and charging cell phones in case of power outages. This is the latest in a series of July rain events, echoing similar overnight flash flooding seen in 2021.
The flood advisory remains in effect until at least 4:30 a.m. More warnings may be issued if heavy rain persists. Check for updates from local agencies and the National Weather Service before heading out.
