Monroe, N.C. – A drone helped deputies locate and guide a lost family to safety over the weekend.
According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, a mother and her four children became lost after dark while walking trails near Jesse Helms Park. What began as a Valentine’s Day outing reportedly took a turn when the family could not find their way back to their vehicle.
Authorities said the mother was able to call 911, prompting deputies from the David Squad and Wingate patrol division to respond to the area. Deputies initially attempted to guide the family by activating patrol vehicle sirens and air horns. When those efforts were not enough to lead them out, additional units responded with a drone.
Within minutes of launching, the drone operator located the family from the air, officials said. Deputies were then guided directly to their location and assisted them back to the park safely.
The sheriff’s office stated that all five family members were safely reunited with their vehicle and no injuries were reported.
The incident highlights how aerial technology is increasingly used in search operations, particularly in wooded areas where visibility is limited after sunset. Outdoor enthusiasts and families visiting local parks may benefit from carrying cell phones and monitoring daylight hours when using trail systems.
Authorities said they are thankful the situation ended safely.
