Chicago, Illinois – The first day of summer is arriving with punishing heat across much of the country, as more than 20 states from Arizona to Pennsylvania face extreme heat warnings and advisories through the weekend. Temperatures are expected to feel as high as 110°F in several regions, with minimal relief overnight.

According to the National Weather Service, a sprawling heat dome is pushing dangerous conditions into the Midwest, Great Lakes, and Mid-Atlantic, including cities like St. Louis, Columbus, Chicago, and Little Rock. Extreme Heat Warnings are in effect through Sunday night for wide areas of Missouri, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio. Portions of Arkansas, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania are also under advisories or special weather statements for oppressive humidity and high heat indices.

Metro areas like Minneapolis, Des Moines, and Kansas City are already seeing heat index values above 105°F, while overnight lows in places like Nashville and Indianapolis may not fall below 80°F. In the Southwest, including Phoenix and Tucson, triple-digit highs continue under prolonged warnings.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor activity during peak heat, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable individuals. Cooling centers are open in many cities, and 211 services can help locate local relief.

Excessive heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the U.S. — and experts stress that this early-season surge could strain power grids and impact travel. The dangerous stretch of heat may extend into next week in some regions.

More warnings could be issued as the heat expands. Stay tuned to local NWS offices and city emergency alerts.
