Washington, DC – The U.S. figure skating community is in mourning after several of its athletes, coaches, and family members were confirmed to be aboard American Airlines Flight 5342, which collided midair with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport on Wednesday night.
The tragic crash occurred as the skaters and their coaches were returning home from the National Development Camp and U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas. Both aircraft plunged into the Potomac River, leading to a massive search-and-recovery effort.
The names of those on board have not yet been officially released, but sources confirm that several rising stars in the sport, along with veteran coaches, were traveling on the flight. The figure skating world has expressed its shock and grief, with tributes pouring in from fellow skaters, fans, and officials.
Rescue teams continue to scour the icy, debris-filled waters of the Potomac for victims. More than 300 first responders, including FBI dive teams, are working under extreme conditions. Authorities have confirmed fatalities, though no survivors have been recovered.
