Michigan greets the morning with swirling snow, dim light, and wind whipping off Lake Superior.

Across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, a Winter Weather Advisory remains active this morning as lake-effect snow and blowing snow continue around Marquette. Temperatures hover near 28 degrees, but strong northwest winds push gusts close to 40 mph, sharply cutting visibility near the lakeshore.

Snow showers focus mainly north of U.S. 41 and west of Ishpeming, where an additional 1 to 2 inches of snow is possible before conditions improve. The snow itself remains light, but blowing and drifting snow quickly reduce visibility on exposed roadways. Drivers encounter sudden whiteouts, especially near open stretches and bridges.

The morning commute takes the hardest hit. Slippery roads and reduced visibility slow traffic along U.S. 41, M-28, and county roads near Lake Superior. Plows work steadily, but wind continues to refill cleared lanes. Slow down and increase following distance through midmorning.

Conditions gradually improve late this morning. Snow showers fade, winds ease slightly, and visibility improves by midday. Even so, colder air pours in behind the system. Road surfaces refreeze quickly as temperatures fall through the afternoon.

By tonight, attention shifts from snow to cold. Lows drop near 2 degrees, and wind chills fall well below zero. Saturday stays cold but brighter, with sunshine offering little warmth and highs near 14 degrees.

Sunday remains mostly cloudy and cold, with highs in the mid-20s. Another round of light snow may arrive early next week before a broader warming trend develops. Meteorologists are tracking milder air pushing north, with temperatures gradually moderating by midweek.

For now, winter driving rules apply. Allow extra time and stay alert for sudden visibility drops.
