LAS VEGAS — It’s been over two years since the mass shooting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

On Dec. 6, 2023, a 67-year-old man entered the university and killed three faculty members. Because the suspect, Anthony Polito, died during a shootout with officers on the scene, no criminal charges were pursued against him. What followed was a public review of the shootout with police officers that killed Polito.

Following the mass shooting, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting, including the motives and the response from law enforcement. The final report, which was released in early 2025, revealed that the possible motive was tied to Polito’s personal frustration with rejected applications to work at numerous colleges.

In a press release on Feb. 7, 2025, the LVMPD concluded that, “the likely motive for the shooting appears to be the suspect’s anger and frustration arising from his failure to obtain employment at local and other higher education institutions, and mounting financial debt.”

In the aftermath of the shooting, the Resiliency & Justice Center has continued to provide support for survivors of violent crime across Nevada, offering trauma-informed therapy, free civil legal services, and healing programs. Since the shooting, campuses and local law enforcement have worked together to increase security.
