A major winter storm is impacting Springfield and much of southwest Missouri, with two rounds of accumulating snow expected through Sunday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Springfield.
The first round of snow begins late Friday night, spreading from southwest to northeast across the region and continuing into Saturday afternoon. After a brief lull for some locations, a second and heavier round of snowfall develops Saturday night and lasts into Sunday, producing the highest snow totals of the event. By the time snow ends Sunday evening, 6 to 14 inches of total accumulation is expected across the area.
Travel conditions will steadily deteriorate, especially during the second round, with snow-covered and slick roads likely to persist even after snowfall tapers off. Officials strongly urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel.
Adding to the danger, brutally cold air will settle in behind the storm. Overnight lows will drop into the single digits, with wind chills ranging from –10° to –20°F each morning through Monday. These conditions pose a serious risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
Residents should complete preparations immediately, limit time outdoors, and be ready for extended disruptions due to snow and extreme cold.
