Dixon, IL – Two Ogle County Sheriff’s Deputies have been released from the hospital following a violent confrontation on Wednesday morning in a gated community. A third deputy remains hospitalized after being struck by gunfire while responding to a suicide-homicide threat.
According to Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle, deputies arrived at 402 Wild Rice Ln. in Lost Nation around 8:39 a.m. They attempted to negotiate with the suspect, identified as Jonathon G. Gounaris, for over an hour. When communication efforts failed, the Emergency Response Team (ERT) entered the residence at 11:51 a.m. and was immediately met with gunfire.
ERT members returned fire, hitting Gounaris, who was found wearing ballistic armor and armed with multiple firearms, a fixed-blade knife, and pepper spray. Two deputies suffered non-life-threatening injuries and have been released from KSB Hospital in Dixon. The third deputy was transported to OSF St. Anthony’s Hospital in Rockford for surgery and remains in care.
The Illinois State Police are investigating the officer-involved shooting. Further updates on the condition of the injured deputy and the suspect are awaited.
