Houma, LA – Two cyclists were killed in unrelated crashes in Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes on the night of June 1, 2025. The incidents highlight the importance of visibility and attentiveness on Louisiana’s roadways, especially for bicyclists.
Around 8:30 p.m., Louisiana State Police responded to a crash on LA Hwy 57 near Cedar Grove Road in Terrebonne Parish, where 75-year-old Jerry Francis of Houma was struck by a 2008 Lincoln Navigator while riding his bicycle south. Preliminary investigations revealed that Francis was not using any lights or reflective materials on his bicycle. Despite the driver’s vehicle being properly restrained and showing no signs of impairment, Francis sustained serious injuries and later died at a local hospital.
Two hours later, around 10:30 p.m., a second crash occurred in Lafourche Parish on LA Hwy 308 at the intersection with LA Hwy 657. A 28-year-old Golden Meadow resident, Jonathon Bourg, was riding a motorized bicycle when he ran a red light and collided with a 2021 Acura TLX traveling east. Bourg, who was not using proper safety equipment, suffered fatal injuries after being struck by the Acura. As with the earlier crash, the Acura driver was properly restrained, showed no signs of impairment, and was uninjured.
Both crashes remain under investigation by Louisiana State Police. Authorities are urging both motorists and cyclists to prioritize safety, urging cyclists to ensure their bicycles are equipped with proper lighting and reflectors at night.
Troopers emphasize that bicycles are considered vehicles under Louisiana law, requiring cyclists to obey traffic laws, especially during low-light conditions.
