Minneapolis, Minn. – A chilly start to September has Minnesota feeling more like October, with high temperatures struggling to break out of the 50s across the Twin Cities Friday afternoon. The National Weather Service says patchy frost is possible late Saturday night into early Sunday morning, especially in outlying areas where lows may dip into the mid-30s.

According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities office, cool Canadian air remains locked in through the weekend, keeping highs near 60 degrees Saturday and Sunday. Warmer, more humid air surges back into the region Monday, when thunderstorms are expected to develop by late afternoon. Some storms could bring heavy rain and gusty winds, particularly south and east of the metro.

Drivers across Minneapolis, St. Paul, and nearby suburbs should prepare for chilly morning commutes this weekend and be alert for slick spots if frost develops. Gardeners are advised to cover sensitive plants overnight Saturday.

The warm-up will be brief, with temperatures climbing into the upper 70s to near 80 Monday and Tuesday before another round of scattered showers moves through. Additional weather advisories may be issued as the next storm system organizes.
