Twin Cities, MN – A wave of dangerous heat and humidity will grip southern Minnesota this weekend, with the Twin Cities expected to hit the low 90s and feel even hotter thanks to soaring heat index values.
According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities office, rising temperatures will begin Thursday and intensify through Sunday. A “Major Heat Risk” is in effect for most of southern and southeastern Minnesota, where heat index values may top 100°F. The greatest risk falls on Sunday, when sustained high temps and humidity could overwhelm those without reliable cooling or hydration.
The Twin Cities metro, Rochester, Mankato, and Albert Lea are all under heightened alert. Northern parts of the state will see milder impacts, though storm chances are expected statewide. Scattered storms may begin Wednesday evening, with stronger rounds likely Thursday night through Friday. Another wave of storms is possible Sunday night into Monday as the heat breaks.
Officials urge Minnesotans to avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat hours, stay hydrated, and check in on older neighbors or those without air conditioning. Emergency cooling centers may be activated if conditions worsen.
Heat risks and storm threats will remain in play through Sunday night, with updates expected daily from the National Weather Service.
