Minneapolis, Minn. – Sunshine dominates Thursday, but a cold front pushing in tonight is set to shake up Minnesota’s weather with showers, storms, and a sharp drop in temperatures by the weekend. Highs in the Twin Cities and across much of the state will top out in the low to mid-80s today before conditions shift late tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop as the front sweeps from northwest to southeast across Minnesota through Friday morning. The greatest chance for storms stretches from Hutchinson and Mankato east toward Eau Claire, Wisconsin, with brief downpours possible during the morning commute.
Drivers across I-94 and Highway 169 should prepare for slick roads and reduced visibility Friday morning. While widespread severe weather is not expected, forecasters caution that any stronger storm cells could produce gusty winds and lightning.
Behind the front, cooler and drier air will settle in. Highs will only reach the low to mid-70s Saturday, with overnight lows dipping into the 50s. The break from heat and humidity will last through Sunday, giving the state a taste of early fall.
