Minneapolis, Minnesota – A dangerous surge of Arctic air is set to grip much of Minnesota and western Wisconsin beginning Thursday evening, bringing wind chills cold enough to cause frostbite in minutes and creating a serious risk for anyone outdoors for extended periods.

According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, an Extreme Cold Watch is in effect from Thursday evening through Saturday morning for large portions of central, southern, and western Minnesota, including the Twin Cities, as well as parts of western Wisconsin. Wind chills could plunge as low as 45 below zero, especially overnight and during the early morning hours.

Minneapolis, St. Paul, St. Cloud, Mankato, Willmar, Alexandria, and surrounding communities are expected to experience the most intense cold. Even brief exposure may become dangerous, with frostbite possible on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Gusty winds will worsen the situation, particularly in open and rural areas.

Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and fully cover exposed skin with hats, gloves, and face protection. Pets should be kept indoors, and neighbors who may be vulnerable to extreme cold should be checked on regularly. Officials also caution against improper use of space heaters or generators indoors.

The Extreme Cold Watch may be upgraded as confidence increases. Bitter cold is expected to persist into Saturday morning, with additional advisories or warnings likely as the Arctic air settles in.
