Saint Paul, Minn. – Dangerous heat and a risk for severe storms will grip much of Minnesota today, with conditions expected to peak this afternoon and storms likely to fire up by evening. Heat indices in southern Minnesota and the Twin Cities could reach the mid to upper 90s, while cooler but still humid air lingers in central Minnesota.
According to the National Weather Service, storms are expected to develop along a stationary boundary stretching through Minnesota into western Wisconsin this evening. The strongest cells could bring damaging winds over 60 mph and large hail exceeding 1 inch in diameter, particularly across eastern Minnesota and into western Wisconsin.
Cities including Red Wing, Mankato, Hutchinson, and Eau Claire should be prepared for intense heat during the day followed by rapidly developing storms tonight. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours and secure outdoor items ahead of potential severe winds.
Storm chances will persist into early Saturday morning before conditions gradually improve. Additional weather statements may be issued if the severe threat increases.
