Minneapolis, Minnesota – Drivers across the Twin Cities could see roads turn nearly impassable today as heavy snow and 50 mph wind gusts whip across the metro, producing widespread blowing snow and dangerous whiteout conditions through the night.

According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. Monday for the Minneapolis–St. Paul region, including Hennepin, Ramsey, Anoka, Washington, Carver, Wright, Sherburne, Isanti, and Chisago counties. The storm is expected to drop 7 to 11 inches of snow across the metro while strong northwest winds intensify through the afternoon and evening.

Heavy snow bands spreading from southern Minnesota could produce intense bursts earlier in the day before gradually tapering later Sunday. Even after snowfall decreases, sustained winds between 30 and 40 mph will continue to blow snow across roads and open areas.

Travel may quickly deteriorate along major routes including Interstate 94, Interstate 35W, Interstate 694, and Highway 10, where visibility could fall below one-quarter mile in blowing snow. Drifting may also cover plowed lanes overnight.

Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel and monitor Minnesota 511 road conditions before heading out. Drivers who must travel should carry winter emergency supplies and prepare for sudden road closures.

Blizzard conditions may persist into the overnight hours before winds begin easing early Monday, though blowing snow could still affect the morning commute.
