Twin Cities, MN – The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities released final snowfall totals for the winter storm that passed through Minnesota on Tuesday into Wednesday, showing a widespread area of 4–6 inches across much of central and eastern Minnesota.
The heaviest snow fell along and north of Interstate 94, where steady overnight snow produced slick travel conditions and reduced visibility for the Wednesday morning commute. According to the NWS snowfall analysis, a large corridor from Alexandria and St. Cloud through Cambridge and Eau Claire received the most accumulation.
Lighter amounts were observed to the south near Mankato, Faribault, and Rochester, where totals generally ranged from 1 to 3 inches. Areas farther north near Brainerd and Hinckley also saw localized pockets of higher snowfall.
The storm system moved quickly out of the region Wednesday afternoon, but cold temperatures and gusty winds led to drifting snow and continued slippery roads in some rural areas. Road crews have been clearing snow along major highways and side streets, though drivers are still urged to use caution on untreated surfaces.
The NWS thanked area residents and spotters for submitting snowfall measurements that helped refine the snowfall map, noting the value of local data in verifying forecasts.
Another round of light snow is possible later in the week, but no major systems are expected through the weekend.
