Twin Cities, Minnesota – Drivers across southern Minnesota, including the Twin Cities metro, should brace for snow-covered roads and reduced visibility starting late Friday night, as a prolonged winter storm pushes through the region into early Sunday morning. Major routes like I-35, I-90, and I-94 are expected to be impacted, especially south of the metro.

According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, a Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for areas along and south of I-90, including Mankato, Rochester, Albert Lea, and Fairmont, where snowfall totals over 6 inches are likely. Meanwhile, the Twin Cities and surrounding suburbs are under a Winter Weather Advisory, with accumulations of 2 to 5 inches expected by Sunday morning.

Snowfall rates won’t be intense, but the long duration—spanning over 24 hours—will lead to steady accumulation and messy travel. Snow will be fluffy in texture due to colder temperatures, which could make blowing snow and low visibility more of a concern for rural routes.

Those traveling across southern and southeastern Minnesota should avoid non-essential travel during peak snowfall, charge devices, and prepare for delays through Saturday night. Updates are expected by 7 a.m. Friday.
