Minneapolis–St. Paul, Minnesota — Dangerous cold will persist across the Twin Cities region through the weekend, with wind chills falling to between −20°F and −30°F Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters say daytime conditions Saturday and Sunday will remain bitterly cold, with wind chills struggling to rise above −10°F, even during afternoon hours. Overnight periods will bring the most hazardous conditions, particularly late Sunday into early Monday, when the cold will intensify again after a brief daytime moderation.

The National Weather Service’s six-hour wind chill forecast shows widespread subzero readings across central and southern Minnesota, including the Twin Cities metro. Locations such as Minneapolis, St. Paul, St. Cloud, and surrounding communities are expected to experience prolonged exposure to dangerous cold, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

While conditions remain dry, officials stress that the lack of snowfall does not reduce the danger. Frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes when wind chills fall below −20°F, especially on exposed skin. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and ensure hats, gloves, and face coverings are worn when outside.

Slight improvement is expected early next week as temperatures gradually recover. High temperatures may approach 10°F by midweek, though wind chills will remain below zero during overnight hours. Despite the modest warming trend, forecasters caution that cold-related hazards will continue, particularly during early morning commutes.

Pet owners are advised to bring animals indoors, and residents should ensure vehicles are winter-ready in case of breakdowns. Those using space heaters should follow safety guidelines and confirm carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly.

The National Weather Service urges continued monitoring of forecasts and statements as conditions evolve, emphasizing that Sunday night will likely be the coldest period of this stretch.
