MINNEAPOLIS–ST. PAUL, MN – Snowflakes swirl through the predawn air across the Twin Cities, briefly reducing visibility to near zero along Interstate 35 and I-94. The National Weather Service warns that a quick-moving burst of moderate snow is dropping south through the metro early this morning, producing slick roads and patchy ice just as temperatures hover in the low 20s.

While the heaviest snow will shift south by midmorning, accumulations near one inch are possible across Minneapolis, St. Paul, and suburbs from Maple Grove to Eagan. Even a small amount is enough to cause dangerous conditions on bridges and untreated pavement, especially with wind chills near single digits.

Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and keep headlights on, as short-duration snow squalls can cut visibility to a few hundred feet. The burst is expected to taper by midday, followed by calmer skies this afternoon.

Looking ahead, a few weak systems midweek could bring light snow again Tuesday night into Wednesday, keeping roads slick through the first half of December. Temperatures will stay well below freezing, meaning refreezing and black ice risks persist overnight.

Five-Day Outlook:

  • Sunday: Light snow early, high 24°F.
  • Monday: Mostly sunny, high 20°F.
  • Tuesday: Partly sunny, high 22°F.
  • Wednesday: Chance of snow, high 27°F.
  • Thursday: Sunny, high 13°F.

Safety Tip: Use caution on side streets and ramps where packed snow turns to ice. Early-season cold snaps like this often catch drivers off guard — take it slow, stay alert, and prepare for winter travel delays.
