ST. PAUL, Minn. – The first flakes of November are quietly spinning across the Twin Cities this morning, catching in headlights and drifting over parked cars. It’s not much — maybe an inch at best — but it’s a clear sign that winter is settling in across southern Minnesota.

According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, light snow continues early today across central and southern parts of the state, tapering by midday. Roads may turn slick in spots, especially along I-35 between Northfield and Owatonna, where brief bursts could coat bridges and side streets. Temperatures will hover in the low 30s under mostly cloudy skies, keeping the air damp and raw.

Behind the flurries, a stretch of cold and quiet weather unfolds through early next week. Sunday brings partial sunshine with highs in the low 30s and a brisk northwest wind gusting up to 30 mph. Monday morning lows could dip into the lower 20s — cold enough to freeze shallow ground and water puddles.

By Veterans Day, however, the pattern flips. Sunshine returns with a milder southerly flow, nudging highs toward the upper 40s to near 50°F. It’s a temporary reprieve before another cool-down likely late in the week.

For now, residents should brace for slick commutes, frosty windshields, and early hints of winter’s bite. After all, the first dusting of snow is less about accumulation and more about the message: the long cold season is knocking early across the Upper Midwest.
