Twin Cities, MN – The coldest air of the season is moving into Minnesota, bringing subzero temperatures, scattered snow showers, and a prolonged stretch of below-normal conditions through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, skies will clear today, but temperatures will continue to fall through the teens before plunging into the single digits and below-zero range overnight. Wind chills are expected to drop between -15°F and -5°F by early Thursday morning.
Clouds will increase again Thursday ahead of a weak system that will bring scattered snow showers Thursday night into Friday morning. Most locations will see light accumulations—generally less than an inch—but localized slick spots could develop during the Friday morning commute.
Friday will remain mostly cloudy but slightly warmer, with highs in the mid to upper 20s. Cold air quickly returns Friday night, setting up another frigid morning Saturday with lows near -5°F to +10°F.
A second round of light snow is possible Saturday afternoon through Saturday night, particularly across southern and central Minnesota. Forecasters say this system could bring a fresh dusting of snow and reinforce the cold pattern heading into early next week.
Residents are urged to dress in multiple layers and limit outdoor exposure, as frostbite can occur within 30 minutes in these conditions. Drivers should remain alert for patchy ice, especially during nighttime and early morning hours.
The extended forecast shows temperatures remaining well below normal into early next week, with highs struggling to reach the 20s across much of the state.
