Minneapolis, MN – A wild temperature roller coaster is gripping Minnesota this week. Bitterly cold air today will give way to above-normal temperatures by Thursday and Friday before another Arctic front plunges temperatures again this weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, Tuesday began with subzero temperatures and wind chills as low as -25°F across central Minnesota. These conditions, prompting a Cold Weather Advisory until 9 a.m., pose a frostbite risk for exposed skin within 30 minutes. Residents are urged to dress in layers and wear face coverings when outdoors.

The brief reprieve begins Wednesday, with highs climbing to the upper 20s under partly sunny skies. By Thursday, temperatures could reach the upper 30s, unusually mild for January. However, the warmth will be short-lived as a new Arctic front arrives Friday evening. Highs will plummet to the teens over the weekend, with overnight lows nearing -15°F in some areas. Wind chills on Saturday could again reach dangerously low levels of -30°F or worse.

Local officials advise caution on icy roads and sidewalks, which are expected to refreeze as temperatures drop. Drivers on major roadways, including Interstate 94 and Highway 35W, should remain alert for black ice and changing visibility conditions.

Residents should prepare for another blast of extreme cold by the weekend by checking heating systems and stocking up on winter supplies. Frostbite risks and increased heating demands may persist into next week as temperatures remain frigid.
