Minneapolis, MN – Sweltering heat and dangerous storms are set to slam Minnesota Saturday, with heat index values near 100°F followed by severe thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and even tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, heat indices will peak between 3 and 6 p.m. Saturday, reaching 100°F in Mankato and 98–99°F across the Twin Cities, Red Wing, and Albert Lea. The intense heat will create dangerous outdoor conditions ahead of a volatile weather setup by evening.

Severe thunderstorms are expected to erupt over central Minnesota Saturday evening and move east-southeast through the night. The Twin Cities, Willmar, and Alexandria fall within a Level 2 (slight) risk zone, with storms potentially bringing wind gusts over 60 mph, large hail, and isolated tornadoes. Torrential downpours may also trigger localized flash flooding.

Residents should avoid strenuous outdoor activity Saturday afternoon, stay hydrated, and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. Travel could become hazardous during and after storms, especially along I-35 and I-94 corridors.

An earlier round of storms may also arrive overnight Friday into early Saturday, with a secondary threat of damaging winds in western Minnesota before sunrise.

⚠️ Storm threats continue into late Saturday night. Updates and possible alert upgrades are expected Saturday morning.
